1971, Krishna Das looking at Maharaj-ji (Neem Karoli Baba) |
(from "Chants of a lifetime by Krishna Das"):
Krishna das: I felt so comfortable in India, so familiar with everything, that I tried to immerse myself completely. I wore Indian clothes, tied my hair up on top of my head like the sadhu, and walked around barefoot whenever I could. Maharaj-ji (Neem Karoli Baba) lovingly tolerated all of this, but as time went on, it was clear that becoming a Hindu was not something that encountered in any way. Even though we spent time with Maharaj-ji in Hindu temples, it was about love, not religion. He honored all religions as true paths to the Divine and had Muslim, Sikh, Jain, and Christian devotees as well as Hindus. In time, I'd realize that there was no sense dressing up who I am. I had to learn to look inside and find who I am, not try to act the part of what I imagined was "holy". But that whould take a while.
