Bijoy Krishna Goswami

(from "Bijoy Krishna Goswami - His divine life and sermons" by Deb Kumar Bhattacharya):

Some gentlemen came and asked Thakur about an easy process of attaining religion.

Thakur [Bijoy Krishna Goswami] said, "Nowadays I find everyone wanting to attain religion very easily. None cares to think what treasure there is in religion and how difficult it is to attain it. Religion can never be attained unless the inner self is completely freed from evil propensities. One cannot get rid of all evil inward tendencies as soon as one wishes to do so.

[So the first reason why it is difficult of attainment is that:] Few have the patience to wait at least for the time that is needed for self-purification. Hastiness to achieve something quickly is the cause of one’s failure to achieve anything.

[The second reason:] Then again everyone wants religion according to one’s own liking. If something offends one's liking, it would not be acknowledged as religion at all.

These two reasons have made the acquisition of religion so very difficult. Religion, after all is not a ripe fruit which may be plucked by any one at his sweet will"
